Editor's note: Athletes from China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have participated in the Olympic Games since 1952, winning four medals. The most recent was Cheung Ka-long, who won the men's foil individual gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Previous Olympic medals were one gold from windsurfing in 1996, one silver from table tennis in 2004 and one bronze from keirin in 2012.
Gold medal
Lee Lai Shan made history at Atlanta 1996 by winning Hong Kong's first-ever gold medal when she won the women's windsurfing event. Lee's victory at the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympics added a glorious chapter to the region's 44-year Olympic history.
Lee Lai-Shan started windsurfing at the age of 12. She began to take part in windsurfing competitions at the age of 17 and joined the Hong Kong team at 19.
Cheung Ka Long became Hong Kong's first Olympic fencing gold medalist, beating the pre-match favorite and defending champion Daniele Garozzo 15-11 in the men's individual foil final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on July 26. The 24-year-old is only the second athlete to become an Olympic champion while competing for Hong Kong.
Silver medal
Table tennis players Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching won the silver medal in men's doubles at the Athens 2004 Olympics.
The "table tennis twins" were once teammates on the Guangdong squad. After leaving the China national team in 2000, they were invited by coach Chan Kong-wah to continue their careers in the city.
Bronze medal
Cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze won the bronze medal in women's keirin at the London 2012 Olympics. Her bronze medal feat handed Hong Kong their first-ever Olympic medal in a cycling event.
Lee became the second Hong Kong athlete to win an individual medal and is now aiming to become the first to win a medal in separate Olympic Games when she competes in Tokyo.
