The 2020 National Intangible Cultural Heritage Quyi Week is taking place in Ningbo, East China's Zhejiang province, from Oct 9 to 14.

Quyi is a general term for traditional Chinese storytelling and ballad-singing, often performed by one or several people and accompanied by a small ethnic musical ensemble.

The art form plays a valued role in Chinese folk culture. Among the current 1,372 national-level intangible cultural heritage projects, 127 fall into the quyi category.

The opening ceremony was held on Oct 10 at the Ningbo Culture Plaza Grand Theatre, where representative quyi artists from around China gave performances of their regional styles.

This year's Quyi Week is jointly hosted by the intangible cultural heritage department and the art department under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and the Ningbo municipal government.

During the festival, 258 selected performances are being screened on online platforms, experts and artists join in discussions, and Ningbo citizens and tourists can attend performances at local communities, schools, scenic spots and hotels.
