Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced on Friday that he will resign, citing health reasons, leaving a sense of uncertainty in many areas, including on geopolitical issues.
"Even though there is one year to go in my tenure and there are challenges to be met, I have decided to stand down as prime minister," said Abe at a news conference in Tokyo, adding that his illness had limited his ability to make "the best decisions for the people".
Japan's longest-serving prime minister added that it was "gut wrenching" to leave so many of his goals unfinished.
Abe, who turns 66 next month, has for years battled ulcerative colitis, an incurable, chronic bowel disease, which also was a factor in his sudden resignation in 2007 as prime minister.
"For almost eight years, my disease was under control; however, this year on June 1 had a regular checkup and found there were signs of a relapse," Abe said while apologizing to the people of Japan for being unable to fulfill his duties.
Abe said he will not name an acting prime minister and will serve until the next leader is chosen.
Local media reported that the Liberal Democratic Party will decide on Tuesday on procedures for a leadership election.
As a close neighbor, China is willing to work with Japan to continue improving and developing bilateral ties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Friday.
