The second Street Dance Festival held in Guangzhou showcased 15 original Chinese dance works from Nov 18-19. 

Since the art form was introduced to China during the 1980s, street dance has grown into a diverse pop culture among youngsters and developed into different styles combining Chinese culture. 

The festival was initiated by the China Hip-Hop Union Committee, which was founded by the Chinese Dancers Association in 2013. Since the China Hip-Hop Union Committee was established, more than 30 subcommittees have been launched nationwide.

One of the dance works, entitled Yingge Dance, is based on a traditional folk dance style named yingge dance, which is popular in Guangdong province. Choreographed by Li Yuhang, the dance piece brings together 10 dancers from a dance team of Guangdong branch under the China Hip-Hop Union Committee. 

In the dance piece, Chuan Yi, created by a street dance team from Yunnan province, dancers use their physical movements to portray the black and white chess game, featuring street dance styles, martial arts and Chinese classical dance. 

Besides the dance works performed by adults, 15 dance pieces featuring children were also showcased during the festival.

According to Xia Rui, the deputy director of China Hip-Hop Union Committee, street dance has developed well in China with academic teaching materials published by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing House in 2015. 

The appeal of street dance has also been boosted by popular reality shows, such as Street Dance of China, streamed by the video site Youku.
