A glance at China-Brazil relation

President Xi Jinping will attend the 11th BRICS Summit in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, from Nov 13 to 14. During the summit, China and Brazil will jointly convey solidarity and cooperation among the BRICS countries and contribute to the vision of a second "golden decade" of BRICS cooperation.

China and Brazil are important emerging economies and have a comprehensive strategic partnership. The stable development of Sino-Brazilian relationship has been marked by fruitful cooperation over the past 45 years.

Remarkable firsts

Brazil is the first developing country to establish a strategic partnership with China and the first Latin American country to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with China. It is also the first Latin American country to have a bilateral trade volume of over $100 billion with China.

Bilateral political relations

In 1993, the two countries built a strategic partnership. The relationship was upgraded into a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012.

China is closely coordinating with Brazil in international organizations and under multilateral frameworks, such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Group of 20 and BRICS, so as to jointly promote the international system to be fairer and more reasonable and safeguard the overall interests of developing countries.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro paid a state visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping from Oct 24 to 26, reaffirming China's commitment to developing China-Brazil relations on a strategic level and with a visionary perspective.

Bilateral economic and trade relations

China-Brazil bilateral economic and trade relations have achieved great development. The bilateral trade volume reached $111.18 billion in 2018, year-on-year growth of 26.6 percent. Trade between China and Brazil totaled $73.42 billion in the first eight months of this year, a jump of 3.1 percent year-on-year, data from the General Administration of Customs show.

Brazil remained China's largest trade partner in Latin America, and China is Brazil's largest trading partner. China exports mainly construction machinery, manufacturing equipment, electronics, textiles, garments and household appliances to Brazil. In addition to agricultural and mining products, Brazil's shipments to China include passenger aircraft, timber, steel, cotton and organic chemicals.

Even though the trade of commodities and goods lie at the heart of bilateral business ties, Brazil's surging demand for modern services and need to upgrade its infrastructure such as smart city projects, power plants and container terminals have brought more opportunities for both Chinese project contractors and manufacturers

Bilateral S&T cooperation

A joint space effort called the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite program, the Chinese and Brazilian governments agreed to carry out in July 1988, is hailed as a model for South-South cooperation.

The Earth-observation satellite - designated CBERS-04A, the sixth satellite jointly built by China and Brazil, is scheduled to be launched at the end of this year.

Brazil is the country with the largest number of joint laboratories with China in Latin America. The two sides have jointly established agricultural laboratories, climate change and energy innovation technology centers, nano research centers, meteorological satellite joint centers, and the two countries are preparing for the construction of a biotechnology center.

Bilateral people-to-people exchanges

The two sides have dynamic cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The Chinese Ministry of Education has established 10 Confucius Institutes and three Confucius Classes in Brazil. A Chinese medicine Confucius Institute will be established at the Brazilian University of Goias, according to the results of cooperation announced by President Xi Jinping and his Brazilian counterpart Bossonaro on Oct 25, during Brazilian president's visit to China.

The two sides emphasized that cooperation in the fields of culture, education and sports, especially soccer, has a positive effect on enhancing mutual understanding. China and Brazil teamed up with a number of agreements to deepen cooperation to strengthen Chinese soccer. Brazil will provide professional coaches to support the development of soccer among youngsters in China.
