Unusual but true: Guinea pig-flavored ice cream
2019-10-11

In unusual but true stories this week, we have guinea pig-flavored ice cream, a puppy in a wheelchair traveling with his owner, an autonomous bus in Germany, and astronauts experiencing life on Mars.

All the odd and interesting anecdotes from around the world are here in our review.

Guinea pig-flavored ice cream

It can't be easy for people who think of guinea pigs as cute pets to learn that guinea pig-flavored ice cream exists in Ecuador.

In Ecuador, people typically cook guinea pigs with salt and serve them with potatoes and peanut sauce. But Maria del Carmen Pilapana is taking things to gastronomic level, serving guinea pigs as a cold dessert.

"My family and my husband thought I was crazy. They didn't think anyone would like these ice creams, but now they're our main products," said Pilapana. She began attending free training courses for entrepreneurs and decided to do something innovative about half a year ago.

Ants, cicadas and worms are used to make some desserts, often chocolate-infused ones, in parts of Latin America. But incorporating such ingredients - guinea pigs included - into ice cream is unusual.

Maria now has new flavors in mind like crab, chicken and pork.

Astronauts experience life on Mars

Aspiring astronauts can now experience life on Mars for a whole month in caves in northern Spain.

Ares Station is a scientific space station set developed to simulate hostile living conditions on Mars in a 60-meter high cave, in Arredondo, Cantabria, Spain. Candidates have to undergo physical and psychological tests before getting accepted for the program.

The idea behind it is to give people a taste of what it would be like to live on the Red Planet, before one day possibly colonizing it. The place is isolated from the outside world, creating living conditions almost identical to Mars.

Puppy in wheelchair travels with owner

Black and white dog Finn, in a wheelchair, traveled with his owner, Bryce LaDuc, across the US after an accident that left the dog unable to use his legs.

Finn had travelled the US with Bryce since he was a puppy – visiting more than 30 states, hiking up mountains and trekking through national parks and forests. But disaster struck last January when Finn was lying on the bed in the campervan he shares with Bryce and her boyfriend Paul. Finn suddenly leapt out of the back door while the vehicle was stationary.

Finn was left with severe spinal trauma and unable to use his legs. But after six months, Bryce splashed out $600 on an all-terrain doggy wheelchair so he could enjoy his adventures once again.

After a pilot phase of two years, Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) has decided to operate a second autonomous bus on the two-kilometer route between Bad Birnbach's railway station and the city center.

The buses are powered by electricity and run free of charge for passengers. The first autonomous bus on a public road was launched in the Bavarian town of Bad Birnbach in 2017.

"We believe that self-driving small buses are a clever addition to our big yellow buses, for example in areas with narrow roads or strict speed limits," the head of Berlin public transport operator BVG, Sigrid Nikutta, said, adding that bus drivers would still be needed as the driverless buses will not replace all traditionally operated vehicles anytime soon.
