China: U.S. should stop 'playing fire' in Hong Kong affairs
2019-07-30

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying questioned the U.S.' role in the series of violent protests happening in Hong Kong, refuting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's remarks which said protest is "appropriate" and China should do the right thing in dealing with protests at a press conference on Tuesday.

Hua urged Pompeo to recognize his position clearly over Hong Kong affairs, stop making "irresponsible" comments while neglecting the violence that had happened in the protests.

Hua condemned the "disgraceful" role the U.S. played during the recent protests and violent incidents in Hong Kong.

According to her, the U.S. has repeatedly interfered in the amendment work of Hong Kong's fugitive bills in the past half year, met with Hong Kong opposition activists and publicly voiced its support for the violent protests. Many Americans and American flags have also been noticed in the violent protests in Hong Kong.

"We're wondering what role the U.S. is playing in recent Hong Kong incidents. I think the U.S. owes the world an explanation on this," Hua said.

"The U.S. must clearly understand that Hong Kong belongs to China. We have repeatedly stressed that the Chinese government will never allow any foreign forces to intervene in Hong Kong affairs, or attempt to disrupt Hong Kong," Hua stressed, reiterating central government's firm support to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's government in governing in accordance with the law.

"We firmly support the police in punishing violent criminals and safeguarding Hong Kong's peace, security and stability. As the saying goes, 'One who plays with fire will get burnt.' We suggest the U.S. stop playing the dangerous game," said the spokesperson.
