2019-07-20

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates will pay a state visit to China; India will launch its second Moon mission; the UK's new prime minister will be announced; US Special Counsel will testify before House panels; and Spain will vote on Sanchez's bid to form new government.

These are the international events under the spotlight for the week starting July 22.

At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will pay a state visit to China from July 21 to 23.

The announcement was made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry at a news conference on Thursday in Beijing.

During Xi's visit to the Middle East in July last year, China and the UAE agreed to improve their ties to create a comprehensive strategic partnership.

India's second Moon mission "Chandrayaan-2" will launch on July 22, according to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

On July 15, IRSO tweeted, "A technical snag was observed in launch vehicle system at T-56 minute. As a measure of abundant precaution, Chandrayaan-2 launch has been called off for today."

A follow-up tweet on July 17 said, "Chandrayaan-2 launch, which was called off due to a technical snag on July 15, 2019, is now rescheduled at 2:43 pm (local time) on Monday, July 22, 2019."

The Conservative party confirmed that Britain's new prime minister will be announced on July 23.

The party said a postal ballot of the 160,000 or so Conservative members will decide who will replace Theresa May as leader, with the ballot closing on July 22.

Boris Johnson currently has the support of two thirds of Conservative voters, according to an opinion poll published over the weekend.

US Special Counsel to testify before House panels

Mueller will testify before two US House panels on the the findings of his Russia investigation on July 24.

Mueller was appointed by the US Justice Department to lead a probe into whether the campaign of Donald Trump, then Republican candidate, had colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential elections and whether Trump had obstructed justice by hindering efforts to investigate the collusion allegations.

In a redacted version of the final report released earlier this year, Mueller's team found that no collusion took place in spite of efforts by Trump's associates - many of whom have since been indicted - to cultivate a relationship with the Russian government.

The report also did not offer a definitive decision on whether Trump had obstructed justice, though Mueller found "substantial evidence [indicating] the attempts to remove the special counsel were linked to investigations of the president's conduct".

The Spanish parliament will vote on Pedro Sanchez's bid to lead a new government on July 23.

Sanchez, Spain's acting prime minister, will attempt to break the deadlock caused by the inconclusive result of April's parliamentary election.

Should Sanchez fail to secure an absolute majority, a second vote - in which Sanchez needs a simple majority - will be held on July 25.
