The fifth China Children's Book Expo (CCBE), taking place in Beijing's Cultural Palace of Nationalities through July 23, explores new ways of introducing literature to the young in China.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In response to a call from the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, the CCBE aims to promote to the Chinese public.
Hosted by the Xicheng district government in Beijing and the Publishers Association of China, the expo focuses on the international exchange of children's books. It gathers works from major publishing houses abroad and in China, through a variety of activities, to open up the world of literature and illustrations to children.
The expo hall is divided into sections, including a reading area, book display, international illustration gallery and a writer meet-and-greet zone.
Over 10 publishers have brought around 35,000 children's books to the event that will feature 108 activities for visitors.
Noteworthy of the event is the attendance of international children's book publishing brands such as Scholastic, DK, Penguin Books and HarperCollins, while the picture book exhibition onsite comprises award-winning works in 11 different languages.
Different from conventional book expos, the CCBE combines printed books with immersive child-friendly activities – attendees will be able to explore reading through AR devices, reading games and live theater performances.
Exhibitors and visitors are also welcome to donate children's books, which will later be transported to poverty-stricken areas in China.
A three-day forum focusing on the creativity of Chinese writers and illustrators and the evolution of children's books in the digital era will take place during the expo.
