'Reborn': A beautiful marriage of fashion, music and dance
2019-07-05
The modern ballet Reborn, masterminded by designer Grace Chen, created a sensational experience for fashionistas and art lovers in Shanghai on Tuesday.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Grace Chen couture brand, the ballet integrated performing arts with a conventional fashion show. Focused on the theme of transformation and beauty, the designer joined hands with musician Chen Gang and ballerina Sisi Qiu.
It opened to the elegant rhythm of Butterfly Lovers (or Liang Zhu, which depicts a story like Romeo and Juliet). The ballet introduces a young girl who later grows up to be a beautiful and confident woman.
Grace Chen is known for inviting her non-model friends to present the latest collection on the runway. And this time, they dance side by side with ballerinas, which amplifies Chen's celebration of feminine beauty in all women and girls.
"I create clothes, and these clothes create a new version of you," Chen said. "I witness the transformation of many women after a complete makeover. They become radiant and more confident to be themselves."
Inspired by "Youthquake", a term coined by Vogue magazine's former editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland in 1965, Chen also turns to youth culture for a source of inspiration. This collection adds denim to highbrow haute couture. Lively colors, like blue and carmine, meet black, white and gold, which blend in a tinge of playfulness in an overall sophisticated outfit.
When looking back on the 10-year journey of Grace Chen, the designer said she will keep tailoring clothes to reflect the quality of modern women.
"I want to celebrate the glamour of Chinese women and showcase Chinese aesthetics to the world," Chen said.
