The government of Hong Kong SAR on Saturday said it would temporarily halt the introduction of a fugitive bill in the wake of public views after riots on Wednesday.

The Chinese central government has reiterated it "supports, respects and understands" the decision to suspend action on the bill, the official said.

The central government will continue to firmly support the chief executive and the SAR government in their administration of the law and to safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests and maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, the official added.

On Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang also voiced the country's firm support to Hong Kong's chief executive, Carrie Lam.

"The central government strongly condemns violent acts, and firmly supports the Hong Kong police force in meting out punishment in accordance with law. It upholds the rule of law and social stability in Hong Kong," Lu said.

He also reiterated that the Hong Kong issue is part of China's internal affairs, and outside parties should not interfere.
